Dr. Rafael Yuste is one of just 8 recipients, out of over 200 applicants, of the DOD’s 2020 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship Competition. The goal of the Yuste lab is to understand how neural circuits works, and he was awarded the fellowship to reengineer the nervous system of the cnidarian Hydra vulgaris.
The competitive Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship is the DOD’s “flagship single-investigator award for basic research” and it aims to “advance transformative, university-based fundamental research,” by choosing “blue-sky, high-risk” projects. Each fellow receives up to $3 million over the course of the 5-year fellowship to “pursue cutting-edge fundamental research projects.”
