First-year PhD students attend twice-weekly talks from Program Faculty about the research in their laboratories in order to facilitate identifying labs of interest for rotations. These meetings (with food and drink supplied when in-person) also provide a venue for regular gathering of the first-year group and an opportunity to learn in outline the breadth of the local research environment.
At the recent suggestion of the Graduate Research Council, speakers have been encouraged to illustrate how their work and general philosophy fits into broader research areas and how it might be extended, and a brief “meet current lab members” session has been added after each talk for informal discussion and insights.
